Two Simple Ways to Brew Yerba Mate Tea

!: Two Simple Ways to Brew Yerba Mate Tea

Want to start drinking yerba mate but don't want to mess around with traditional method requiring a gourd and straw? That's how I felt several years ago when I wanted to start drinking it as a way to cut back on coffee. I wasn't interested in the traditional aspects of how to brew it. I just wanted to drink it! Here's a couple of different methods that I have used over the years to make yerba mate both at home and at work.

The easiest way to make yerba mate at home without having to purchase anything is to use your regular drip coffee maker. Simply put a few scoops of yerba mate into a coffee filter, put it in the basket, add water and push the button. It's simple to do and is exactly the same as brewing a pot of coffee. That being said, there are a few downsides to using this method.

First of all your mate might take on a slight coffee taste unless the filter basket and carafe are really clean. Secondly, it can be hard to get the strength right as you probably don't want to make an entire pot every time. It can take a lot of trial and error to get the mate to taste the way you want. The last problem is that by using a coffee maker you have no control over the temperature of the water being used.

The second method to brew yerba mate is the method that I use today. That is by using a coffee press or french press. This method allows you to easily control the brewing strength and water temperature. Simply put the mate in the press and add boiling or hot water. Then wait five or so minutes and push down on the plunger. Brewing strength can be adjusted by waiting longer to push the plunger down. You can even get tumblers that have a built in press. This is great for taking your yerba mate on the road or at the office.

Yerba mate is a great tasting beverage that has many health properties. Don't let the purists put you off with complicated brewing methods. Either of these simple methods will give you a great cup. Enjoy!
